In 1767, Samuel Wallisbecame the first European to discover the island of Tahiti. The second person to step foot on Tahiti was the French voyager, Bougainvillein April 1768. Subsequently in Bougainville’s travel accounts, he described the island as an earthly paradise, where men were “noble savages” and women were like Venus. Tahiti enjoys a mild tropical climate all year round with an annual average temperature of 27°C. The island consists of two rounded portions connected by a short isthmus. The north-western portion is known as "big Tahiti", while the smaller south-eastern portion is known as "small Tahiti". From a bird’s eye view, the island of Tahiti resembles the mermaid depicted in Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale – with “big Tahiti” as the head, and “small Tahiti” as the tail.
